Accent - can be set by using an element (colour, form, texture, movement, line) to create a point of interest and bring out the most in a design, an accent is minimal in size but great in impression Balance - visual balance is the feeling of balance in a design when all elements used right and without creating the feeling of leaning sidewise-forward or backwards or toppling. Colour – primary colours are red, yellow and blue, secondary colours are orange, green and violet. Non-colours black and white. Tertiary colours BROWNS, Pastel colours are colours mixed with white. Dimension - to be able to see three dimensional through the arrangement. Elements - of Design are Colour, Form, Texture, Space and Movements Fashion - the changing styles of fashion also is part of flower designers, bringing through the look of Interior design and clothing and interpreting the trends of each season Grouping - bringing flowers together for visual impact by creating groupings of forms, colours, textures, movements. Harmony - blending of all parts of a design to work together. Interpretation – we should interpret ideas, nature, thoughts and not copy. Interpretation leads into new ways, new ideas and new interpretations. Juxtaposition - to place things together in order to suggest a link through or emphasize the contrast between them. Knives - a must in every florist’s tool kit used to cut clean diagonal stems and not damage the stalk. Line - the visual path of which your eye travels in an arrangement/ design. Minimalistic - ‘Less is More’ Using very little material, great impact through movements, texture, colour, space and form. Narcissi – the first flowers of spring. Oasis - common name for floral foam, the breakthrough florist’s material that soaks up and holds water for arrangements to be set into. (OASIS is actually the company’s name) Proportion – ideal proportion like human body is 1/3:2/3, 3/8:5/8. This is a guideline and can be exceeded or decreased, depending on style, forms, lines, texture and colours used in a design. Quality - the florists mantra is to provide beautiful perfect blooms. Rhythm - the movement your eye takes through an arrangement. Symmetry - a design could be cut in half and both halves are identical. Theme - the composition of your flowers. Unusual - some of the exotic flowers imported from overseas. Vegetative Style – one the four main styles in European Floristry, the other ones are Decorative Style, Parallel Style and Abstract- line Style. Wreath - symbolic form of never ending life, circle of time, used as a funeral floral tribute, Christmas wreathes for doors, tables.
